MICHAEL ADETOLA

Bible text: Genesis 3:1-6
3:1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God
had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every
tree of the garden? 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the
fruit of the trees of the garden: 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst
of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye
die. 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 3:5 For God
doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye
shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree
was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to
make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
What is the meaning of downfall? It means the cause of such a fall; a critical blow or Before going into details of the cause of the downfall, I want us to remind ourselves
of certain truths and some of which are:
1) God created the Heaven and the Earth. Genesis 1: 1 -In the beginning God created
the heaven and the earth.
2) The will of God towards Man is to have Dominion. Genesis 1: 28- God blessed
them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and
subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air,
and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
3) God thoughts towards Man are of no evil intents. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the
thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil,
to give you an expected end.
James 1: 17 every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down
from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Now let’s study of Genesis 3: 1- 5 before dwelling on verse 6.
Verse 1: Firstly, It shows some things to note about the serpent which are, the
serpent was crafty, clever, subtle and that the serpent was Satan. Secondly, it shows
the first statement of the serpent towards Eve. And the statement in simple terms
can be said like this "Do I understand that God told not to eat from any tree in the
garden?"
Verse 2 - 3: It shows us the replies of Eve to Satan’s question. She tells the serpent
the instructions of God which is that they can eat of the fruit of the trees of the
garden but the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God said they
should not eat of it, and they should not touch it, or they will die.
Verse 4-5: The serpent replied Eve saying four major things and they are:
· They won't die
· God knows that if they eat their eyes will be opened.
· They will be like God
· They will have knowledge of Good and evil.
All these show the deception of Satan, he gave four reasons that are not genuine at all. They were already in the image of God, how much more will
they be like God by disobeying Him? As regards the knowledge of good and
evil, they already had knowledge. How? You may ask. Adam and Eve do
communicate with God, and communication births knowledge.
Verse 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was
pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit
thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
In this particular verse there are 5 things to observe or note and they are:
· Eve saw that the fruit was good and suitable for food.
· The fruit was delightful and pleasant to Eve's eyes or in other words she
realized that she would get of it.
· She perceived that the tree would make one wise. In other words, She would
know every thing
· She took and ate the fruit
· She gave the fruit to Adam and He ate it.
Four out of the five observations seen in Verse six above represents some pitfalls
that cause the downfall of a man. Now let’s examine what each observation
represent:
1) Lust of the flesh: Eve saw that the fruit was beneficial to the body (lust of the flesh). Although it was not going to kill her, it wasn’t beneficial to her spirit
